Statue of Unity

The first Deputy Prime Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is honoured by the Statue of Unity. It is 597 feet tall and situated in Gujarat's Narmada district. It was constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) with an estimated $1 billion price tag of Rs 2,989 crore. On October 31st, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the statue in front of thousands of spectators who had assembled for the occasion.

Location and Design of the Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity is located in the state of Gujarat, India. It's about 20 miles south of Vadodara and 30 miles north of Ahmedabad.
 

 

The statue is designed to be tall enough that when you stand next to it you feel like you're looking up at a giant! The height of this statue makes it one of the tallest statues in the world.
 

 

The construction was started in 2013 and took 5 years to complete due to delays caused by weather conditions and other factors such as labor strikes.

  • By Air: The nearest airport to the Statue of Unity is the Vadodara airport, which is around 90 km away. You can take a taxi or a bus from the airport to reach the Statue of Unity.

  • By Train: Reach till Vadodara railway station, which is around 90 km away. From there, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach the Statue of Unity. You can also board the train till EKTA Nagar aka Kevadiya colony station which is only 12 minutes away from SOU and take a rickshaw to reach the destination.

 

  • By Road: The Statue of Unity is well-connected by road. You can take a taxi, a bus, or drive your own vehicle to reach there. It is around 200 km from Ahmedabad, 420 km from Surat, and 150 km from Vadodara.

Once you reach the Statue of Unity, there are various modes of transportation available to reach the statue, such as shuttle buses, electric carts, and bicycles.

It weighs 6,000 tons which makes it heavier than any building ever constructed anywhere else in history! The construction involved using 1,700 metric tons of steel; 250 metric tons each of cement and bronze; 200 metric tons each granite stone blocks and reinforced concrete etc...
